I’ve got an ukulele up for sale. But if you don’t understand the value and uniqueness of handmade and traditionally handcrafted Hawaiian wood - then you should just stop reading now, because this letter isn’t for you.
However, if you want something unique, not made in a factory but instead made by a master Hawaiian craftsman, handcrafted the old-fashioned way using traditional tools, then read on as you may be able to get your hands on my Sonny D.
Let me share a little background with you about it.

Digging For Treasure
First off, it took me a few months to even find a Sonny D. When I started looking, there were hardly any for sale second hand and I heard it said before that Sonny D ukuleles were getting harder to find. So I was pleasantly surprised to find this ukulele was coming straight from the factory warehouse - which means I’ve been the sole owner!
When I got it, it was exactly what I was looking for: a bigger size to fit my big, wide hands. As a leather craftsman and all around handy man, I use my hands everyday, and they are large and wide. If you are a player with big hands like me, then you may find that sometimes playing a little Soprano is a lot more difficult just because your hands are too big; at least it was for me.
So finding this Sonny D was a relief.
Why Super Concert Is #1
And this isn’t just a Concert Ukulele. It’s a Super Concert. That means it’s got a Concert body, but Sonny D put a Tenor neck on it making it just a little bit longer. Sonny D is also known for making the necks on his ukulele wider. That means it’s better for fast finger picking (and better for larger hands!)
In fact, Sonny D himself (who also has big hands) said Super Concert are #1 because they are the best sounding. You can play easier and make less mistakes than when the strings and the neck are shorter.
He also makes the fret board go all the way to the sound hole. Darrell Rapozo, a Professional Ukulele Player, says “You can play all the way up the fret board and never lose tone quality. Not all ‘ukulele can do that”

About The Maker
In case you haven’t heard much about Sonny D, let me share a bit about him.
Sonny Dahlin is a luthier who started at the Kamaka Ukulele company (the first and oldest ukulele company on Hawaii) and left to start his own boutique business. He has been making top-of-the-line ukuleles in Waipahu, Oahu (less than 30 minutes west of Honolulu) for nearly 50 years. He uses his own two hands and works with his son Dwayne, who he groomed to take over the business.

Because all of the ukuleles from Sonny D are handcrafted using the old fashioned, traditional style in this two-man workshop, they aren’t manufactured to be “picture perfect”. They can be asymmetrical, without uniformity, with a unique structure and may even have blemishes. Despite not having a picture perfect look, his ukuleles have an absolute PERFECT sound.
If you care about having a uniform ukulele that looks like every other ukulele made by a factory line of workers - then this ukulele is NOT for you.
If you understand the painstaking time, commitment and passion that goes into making a handcrafted Hawaiian ukulele and making it into a piece of playable art, then you’ll be excited to learn more about this Pineapple Super Concert Curly Mango Sonny D, I’ve got that I am ready to pass along.
It’s Not About The Looks,
It’s The Sound
First let me say, that Sonny D has sold to many players in the last 5 decades. He is a world renowned custom ukulele maker known for being an unpretentious, burly but big-hearted, warm and gentle guy who will take time out of his work to tell stories about his ukuleles and even listen to your own journey about how you fell in love with ukuleles.
If you ever have the opportunity to stop by his shop, you might be surprised to find yourself parked in front of an unimpressive, old, and rusty two-story building with a simple Sonny D banner strewn across the banister.
But inside, you will find him shaping handpicked woods to create extraordinary and strikingly beautiful ukuleles whose sound is simply stunning.
What Other Players Say
Countless famous Hawaiian entertainers have used Sonny D Ukuleles for recording their albums or performing live on stages across the world. Artists include Troy Fernandez and Herb Ohta, Sr. (known respectfully as Ohta San) have endorsed Sonny D in the past. World renowned Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (known affectionately as “IZ”) recorded with one of his Sonny D and owned at least one of his rare one-of-a-kind ukuleles. Other artists include: The Ka'au Crater Boys, Rebal Soljahz, Na Leo, Sean Na'auao, Robi Kahakalau, Beach 5.
Other Sonny D customers also seem to rave about him.

On UkuleleHunt.com, Yoshi said, I’ve been playing Sonny D since ’96 and I’m on my second one… I am very pleased with the sound and quality of both of my Tenors. Uncle* Sonny and Aunty* Aggie have been great with anything that I’ve ever needed
Joseph Abiva said, “Just pick up my new hand crafted Sunny D “Tenor”..It sounds, look, and the quality is superb!! I have to say, it is a well investment…”
Joel E wrote on Trip Advisor, “I have a treasured piece and I am grateful to have met and befriended such a wonderful person.”
Val Y wrote on Yelp, “I feel blessed and am proud to be the owner of this special ukulele made by Sonny D. Mr. D, you da man!”
(*Note: it is common in Hawaiian culture for younger people to call men older than them “Uncle” and women older than them “Aunty”, even though they aren’t actually related, as a term of respect, like kids in the United States did in the 50’s saying “sir” or “ma’am”.)
Now, if you stuck with me this far, I’m sure you want to know more about this Super Concert I’m selling.
So…
Let Me Tell You More
About This Uke
It’s a Pineapple shape, made from Curly Mango wood grown, in Hawaii. Mango wood is a common wood that is affordable to produce. The color is physically bright, tough and durable. The sound creates a bright, tonal quality that sounds clear and resonates well, and is similar to maple known for amplifying the high frequencies and clarifying them.
This ukulele is in mint condition. The Fret board is Rosewood - used for its strength and bright, warm rounded sound with long sustain. There’s 16 frets as it’s a Tenor neck.
There’s also several Hawaiian Koa accents. They’re solid at the bridge, an inlay on the headstock, on the heel at the back of the neck, and outlining the sound hole.
Tortoise inlay is rimmed around the front and back, as well as the bottom near the strap button.

Included
Gold quality tuning keys, and a plastic nut which are all original.
Modifications
I made include the two black strap buttons, and the bone saddle I added at the bridge. I like bone because it brings out the sustain and tone and is a nice color. It’s also tough enough to last without slicing up the strings.
On this ukulele, I changed the strings to Living Water strings. If you don’t know about Living Water, these strings are declared as “Made In Heaven!” Actually they’re just made in England and “give a wonderfully vibrant, crystal-clear tone to your ukulele. They don’t break easily, give a beautiful even tone and last a long time.” (According to creator Ken Middleton). Made from 100% fluorocarbon they are strong and flexible.
They truly are the best strings, to me, having had pros and cons with Aquilas, Worths, and D’Addarios.
These strings are set for super sensitive play, but you could always change them to better suit your taste. I like them because the tension is not tight which makes it easier to play.
With this Super Concert Pineapple, I think it’s really great for soloing on. Like I said, you could do fast finger picking or even use a pick.

So Why Would I
Sell It Then?
So I bet you’re wondering, if this is such a great ukulele, then why am I selling it?
Having been bitten by the ukulele bug, I started with one. Then I had four. Then I had seven. When I got to nine, my girl gave me the cleared throat and the crazy eye.
So, plain and simple - I have to downsize. I’ve already sold several Kamaka’s, a Martin and several Ko’aloha. I’ve given away Lanikai, and Leho. And I already have a special Pointed Pineapple Concert Ali’i from my first trip to Kauai, a black Lava, a Silver Series Pineapple Ko’aloha, a Super Concert Kamaka, and another Bell Shaped Sonny D made entirely of Koa, all of which I can’t part with, so I have to part with this Pineapple Sonny D, and if you want this to be your next ukulele, I want you to be happy with your new treasure!
How Much Is It?
Now how much am I selling this for?
Well, it could easily go for $1600. And if you find one selling from Japan, it could be at least $2000, plus shipping. Doing a quick search online most Sonny D that aren’t held by a famous player are selling for $1500. Some even for $1200.
But I’m not gonna charge you $2000, or $1600, or even $1200.
So, I think it would be fair to sell this one-of-a-kind, mint condition, piece of art, made by a master craftsman for $1100.
And to make it even more fair, I’ll include free shipping to anywhere in the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska.

Just A Little
Extra Something
But to sweeten the deal, I’m throwing in one last bonus before I wrap this up.
I’ll include an Uke Crazy Black Hard Foam Ukulele Case. This is an additional $50 value.

It’s weather-resistant, nylon exterior. Black plush interior with two straps for securing the ukulele neck. It’s light weight and has a hidden storage compartment and a generous-size exterior pocket. There’s a handle to carry side ways and includes a strap to sling over your shoulder or across your back.
Because this Sonny D is an original, this case isn’t perfectly fitted to it, but I padded it to make it fit and it is super secure with the modification.
